Sarries 11 v 10 Ross on Wye

This weeks encounter for the Sarries was against recently relegated Ross. The Sarries showed in the first 5 minutes that they were more than a match for the huge Ross pack with the front row of Burnham, Fitzharris and Bennett (all who are barely out of nappies!!) shoving the experienced Ross front row all over the park. It was not long before the pressure on Ross was showing, with them giving away penalty after penalty. Unfortunately the normally unflappable and slimmer(!) Surman was off target on a couple of occasions and the score was at 0 – 0 for most of the first half.

The Sarries continued to play all the rugby and were finally rewarded with a try after some good interlink play between the forwards and the backs which saw the blonde pocket rocket Lawrenson dive over in the corner. Half time (5 – 0). The 2nd half did not start well for the Sarries fumbling the kick off and Ross were putting the pressure on and with the penalty count seeming to be mounting against them it wasn`t long before Ross were on the score sheet with a try which was converted (5 – 7). Even though the score line was close, the Sarries looked far the better side but for some reason the penalty`s were just going against them. The next 20 minutes of the game were very eventful with what seem to be a perfectly good try not given and some more questionable decisions going against the Sarries. It was looking like this one might slip away but again the dominance of the pack was rewarded with Stoneman taking over the kicking duties and kicking a penalty in front of the posts. This however, seemed to urge the visitors on with them kicking their own penalty and with 10 minutes to go the score line was 8 – 10. Yet again to the Sarries frustration, what seemed to be a perfectly legal charge down and try by Norwegian Captain Hanger was disallowed, it seemed as if time had ran out for the Sarries but the never say die attitude payed off with Stoneman kicking another penalty making the final score 11 – 10.

Painswick 30 v 6 Saracens

13 MAN SARRIES GO DOWN TO PAINSWICK

The Saracens went into this game in a confident mood after the win against Newent the previous week, and it was not long into this encounter that the Sarries forwards were again looking stronger than the opposition with bulldozing runs from captain Nick Hanby and new signing Gareth Rogers, which eventually paid off with a penalty by Marcus Latchford to give the Sarries the perfect start. This seemed to spark Painswick into life and if it wasn’t for some excellent cover tackling and a last gasp interception from winger Tim Perks the Sarries could of quite easily of been a couple of tries down, but eventually Painswick did brake down the workman like Sarries defence and scored a brake away try which was converted to make it 7-3, it was the ill discipline of Painswick and again some bullish work by the 2 welsh boys in the engine room Rogers and Coleman that gave Latchford another chance at goal which he slotted with ease (7-6), the last 5 minutes of the first half saw the Sarries continue to put on the pressure but with no gain, and an injury time penalty by Painswick gave them a half time lead 10 – 6. But the Sarries were still very much in it and it looked as if we were going to have a cracking 2nd half, this could not be further from the truth with several injuries and changing of position the Sarries looked all at sea and playing the game with 13 men for 10 minutes after a controversial Nelly Francis sin bin saw Painswick managed to run in 4 tries leaving a very disappointed Sarries with a 30 -6 loss.

I am sure that if we all train hard this coming week we can put this one behind us and get back to winning ways next week.
