This weeks fixture saw the Sarries travel down the golden valley to local rivals Old Boys, with both sides sitting mid table of Glos 1 and the sun shinning at the Horton Rd club it was all the right ingredients for a good game. The early exchanges of the game saw some good forward work from both sides but it was the Sarries who were looking the most dangerous with 17 year old fly half Paul Miles pulling the strings and putting his side into the Old Boys half with some accurate kicking and it wasn`t long before the constant pressure paid off and after several drives from Scott Rowe and Dave Fitzharis The Old boys strayed off side and Miles slotted the penalty giving the Sarries the perfect start. This however spurred the Old Boys into life and there hard grafting forwards applying lots of pressure in the scrum were rewarded with the first try of the game after a quick tap penalty taken by the scrum half he managed to find the smallest of holes in the Sarries defensive line to scramble over the line. Saracens second string remained top if the league with a comfortable win over former giants Spartans.
The Sarries came out of the blocks fast a searing break by Paul Hewitt saw him blast past several tacklers to score. Ten minutes later former first team out side half saw a gap and strode over to score he added the extras. A third try was added before the break as Connor powered over. Half time 17-0.
The second half the Spartans played with great heart into the wind and limited the Sarries to one further try from Hewitt. The last 10 minutes Spartans dominated and it took a brilliant try saving tackle from Connor to stop their Spartans full back in full flight. Try as they might they couldn’t break down the Sarries defence.
Next week sees the league leaders travel to second place team Stow, when better rucking and more composure will be needed.
